Moving house can be a stressful and expensive process, having moved so far 23 times in my life, I know a little something about it. In fact, it can be so expensive that most people don’t even bother trying to save any cash and instead take the financial blows when they come. However, when we live in such an expensive world, this isn’t something that most of us can really afford to do. Thankfully, there are several ways to be more organised, prevent chaos, and save yourself some money here and there. Here are five things you should do.
Book Moving Company Early
When it comes to moving house, a professional moving company is absolutely essential. Granted, you could save some money by hiring a van and trying to move yourself, but it very rarely makes sense to do so. It’s a lot safer, less stressful, and more time efficient to use the professionals. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t save money; As with most things, shopping around and booking early can save you some cash, so make sure that you do so.
Clear Out Your Clutter
Before you start packing, make sure to go through all of your belongings and get rid of anything you no longer want or need. This will save you money on packing materials and transporting or storing your belongings. Make sure you compare a range of rubbish removal services in your area and find the most cost-efficient one to get rid of all of your junk. Instead of throwing all of these things away, you should consider selling some of them to boost your moving budget.
Avoid Buying Packing Materials
If you’re not careful, packing materials, like boxes and bubble wrap, can cost you an arm and a leg. Thankfully, you don’t have to go out and buy all of these things brand new. Instead, visit a few local businesses and stores and see if they have any boxes they wouldn’t mind donating to you. Most will have at least a few lying around the place. Instead of bubble wrap, you could protect your fragile items with blankets and other soft furnishings. After all, you’re packing them anyway.
Don’t Throw Away Food
Most people throw away all of their food just before moving house, but this is a huge waste. Instead, take a look around your kitchen and write down exactly what you have to eat before moving house. Then, with this list, you can create a meal plan for the weeks leading up to your move. In this meal plan, you should try to incorporate as much of your food as you possibly can. If anything is left over at the end, you should donate it to a food bank, rather than throwing it away.
Be Organised With Packing
If you plan to pack up your home yourself, then it’s vital that you’re as organised as you possibly can be. Leaving your packing until the last minute can lead to costly delays that you simply can’t afford. While you’re packing, make sure you put together a box of essentials you’ll need on your moving day, including snacks, coffee, tea, toilet roll, and anything else you might need. This way, you won’t have to go and buy new items simply because you can’t find yours.
Moving house can be a costly process, but with these tips, you should be able to save some money here and there.
