We moved into our new home about a little over a year ago now. It still feels like it was just yesterday, and if I am being super honest, we still have not unpacked all the boxes in the garage. I feel like at some point, that stuff may just end up at goodwill, because whatever is in there we have not needed.
Before we moved in though, there were a few things I knew, as a seasoned mover (22 moves and hopefully no more!), you should definitely take care of some before you can relax into your new home setting. Too many people move in and forget to do some of the most important parts of the moving process, but that’s a big mistake and you should be sure to avoid it. Read on if you want to find out more about all the things that matter during this stage of the moving process.
Unpack the Essentials First
Unpacking should begin right away. If you don’t do it now, you’ll be left in limbo without many of the essential things you need in life, and that’s never a good thing. So make sure you unpack the essentials before you do anything else because that way you can begin to regain some normality.
Get the Utilities Sorted
You’ll then need to get the utilities up and running in your new place. Without sorting this issue out, you’ll be left without water, gas and electricity. To put it simply, your home will be pretty much unusable until you make these calls and get everything properly set up.
Have the Boiler Checked
Boilers that are old or haven’t been checked for a long time tend to present problems later on. That’s why it’s so important to get them checked out once you move in. Find a professional with residential and commercial boiler expertise. They’ll be able to look it over, make improvements or even sell you a new one if that’s a necessary course of action for you. And you can always get a second opinion too.
Find All of the Important Things
Once you’ve unpacked the essentials and got the utilities up and running, you can move onto the important things around the house. Every home has a water supply that can be turned on and off, and the same applies to the mains power. So you need to find out where these switches and taps are.
Clean the Home
It’s worth giving the home a good clean before you start living there properly because you’ll want to make sure that you’re starting afresh with a clean home. No one wants to be living among the mess left behind by the previous owner, so get this done as soon as possible.
Secure the Home
Finally, you should make sure that the home is as secure as it possibly can be. The last thing you want is for you to become the victim of a burglary within days of you moving in. But insecure homes are easy targets so strengthen your locks and put cameras and other security tech in place.
Making a move is always big, but the work doesn’t end when you’ve finally got the keys to your new place. Make sure that you do all the things on this list before you put your feet up. Doing so could save you time and energy later on, so don’t wait any longer.
